WHETHER NEW OR returning to the university, there are a multitude of clubs and societies to join. Here is a guide to a few of them within the arts that might take your fancy ahead of the fair next week. We will also be doing a ‘Spotlight on…’ series throughout the year to get a more in depth look at each society.
Abercoustic are currently Aberystwyth’s only acapella choir. Formally known as ‘Aberglee,’ abercoustic perform contemporary music throughout the year, with rehearsals from 6-9 on a Wednesday night. After auditions, we work towards a charity Christmas show, where everyone gets a chance to show off their solo skills, and the end of year show, where we perform all the songs we’ve been working on throughout the year. The choir are all friendly people, as you’ll find out if you see us on socials on a Wednesday night, and we all have a great time in rehearsals, even though we are meant to be working! Abercoustic is a fantastic little family, and we’d love to have you join!
Aberystwyth Art Society
We’re a fun, friendly society for anyone interested in art, not just fine art students. We run fortnightly socials on Wednesdays as well as art workshops and an overseas trip over Easter.
The Broad-Ways Theatre & Film Society aims to create brand new, original work for stage and screen created by students themselves. We take your new writing projects, pair them with a director and put them into production. So if you are a Writer, Director, Actor, Designer or anything in-between come join our friendly society. You do not have to be a drama student to be part of our creative community!
Do you love musicals? Then come and join Curtain Call Musical Theatre Society! A fun, energetic, friendly society full of socialising and performing! Come take part in our showcases, open mic nights, Tuesday social nights and introducing our first show of the year, ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’! Auditions for the show will be 12th and 13th of October. So, come see us at the Freshers fair, we look forward to meeting you!
We are a fun and outgoing sports club that is open to everyone regardless of ability, even those people with two left feet! You will be taught to dance in a relaxed atmosphere, at your own pace. Ballroom and Latin dancing is something that anyone can pick up at any time. Whilst we compete against other universities like all other sports clubs, the emphasis is not all on competitions and rather the enjoyment of dancing and being in each other’s company. We regularly socialise together and with other societies in the evenings and during events such as social dances with the local community, dodgeball and dance show cases. Not forgetting two of our yearly highlights include weekends away at Blackpool visiting the Winter Gardens and Tower Ballroom, as well as going on tour to Lloret de Mar in Spain! This allows us to create lasting friendships, in which no one is left out of the tight community of our club.
English and Creative Writing Society
Like books, and cake? Then you’ll probably love ECWS! With a weekly book & cake club, amazing socials (from Harry Potter to white t-shirt!) and fantastic opportunities to have your work published through competitions and a yearly anthology; we’ve got something for everyone!
Exploding Fish is an improvisational and devised drama society which allows people to explore their creativity and spontaneity. We run a Tuesday workshop for everyone to enjoy and if they like then there are opportunities to join our performing group the Knights of Improvalot. Our Knights perform fortnightly and have been known to do short performances for charity shows or showcase events. We have a Facebook page and have some performances on YouTube, feel free to check Exploding Fish to learn more about us.
The Nomadic Players
The Nomads are welcoming theatre society that perform published plays. We’re one of the longest running drama and theatre societies at Aberystwyth University and we are always looking to have new members, be that actors, directors or techies. We put on 5 2 Act plays a year along with a selection of short 1 act plays. Please feel free to come and visit us during Freshers week to find out more about what’s going on this year in the society.
Panthers is Aberystwyth University’s first and only urban dance squad. Competing in Varsity and at Go Hard or Go Home every year, we train 4 times a week at varying difficulties with optional freestyle workshops. Our classes vary each week with different genres of dance such as House, Locking and Contemporary. Whether you’re a beginner with little experience or an advanced dancer with years of experience, we welcome you all to come and join our Panthers family! With socials every week and family events like movie nights and BBQ’s on the beach, we grow together as a dance squad with the primary aim of having fun whilst enjoying a boogie. Find us on Facebook by searching ‘Aberystwyth University Panthers 16/17.’
Any of them take your fancy? Head to the Fresher’s Fair next week to see them for yourselves.
We will also be there if you would like to be part of ASM this year!
