A DOMINANT Aberystwyth University Women’s Hockey 1st‘s have bagged the South Wales Division Two league title with two games in hand, leaving the team to play their penultimate and final games without the threat of Pembroke 1st‘s (their closest trailing rivals) stealing a well-deserved win.
Aber have 15 wins and one draw so far in Div 2, along with some mixed results in the BUCS league Western B2 and an excellent Cup run that only came to an end last week when Bristol 2nd‘s stole a 2-1 win.
As well as having the lead on points, Aber have scored the most and conceded the least goals of any other team in the league. With their one draw against Camarthen, their first game, they’ve got 15 consecutive league wins.
Laura Coggins, 1st Team Captain, had this to say about the squad’s success this year:
Obviously we’re thrilled about winning the league, we’ve worked really hard this season and having won the league unbeaten it’s all paid off!
I like to think our team morale makes a huge difference and making sure everyone’s confident in themselves and everyone around them which comes through training every week and being really committed!
I think next year [the team] will be fine in Div 1. They’re losing a few players but we’ve had some really good additions to the squad this year which means they’ll have the strong core squad for next year.
I asked her what she thought had been their best win from all their competitions this year, and although it was a tough choice Laura picked one from outside the South Wales League:
I think it was getting through to the semi finals, it was a BUCS Cup game [away against Cardiff3rd] but we really fought as a team and to win that game was amazing. Celebrations got a tad out of hand though!
It’s honestly been an amazing season and an absolute pleasure captaining them, we’re not just team mates and I wouldn’t have wished for a better team!
Their last Div 2 games are home this Saturday against strugglers Risca, and lastly away to Pembroke on March 19th. They also have one last game in their BUCS division against Cardiff 4th, with a shot at 4th place finish on the table. Good luck girls!
