Students’ Union Elections: Confusion and anger at the removal of quad campaigning

WITH only 24 hours before voting opens for this year’s Student Union elections, Aberystwyth University staff have begun jet-washing chalk slogans from the campus. There have also been campaign banners taken down and pushed into litter bins.

Candidates have been free to drum up support since Sunday and, as has been the case for many years prior, the steps and quad to the Arts Centre and the SU have been covered with slogans written with chalk. This is often a strategy for candidates as it is one of the more effective ways of promoting themselves whilst keeping campaign costs to a minimum, and problems have arisen in the past with exceeding their budget. Lauren Marks, a candidate for President, tweeted her anger at the removal of her promotional material:

Possible reasons suggested for the removal of these is an open day for prospective students tomorrow. Check back for updates and responses from current Student Officers and Aberystwyth University.
