DIGS Memorial Shield: Seven goals, three draws, one good cause

FRIDAY the 16th played host to yet another exciting game of DIGS football, in the form of the Thai Pham Memorial Shield, which commemorates the tragic loss of Borussia Teeth player Thai Pham who passed away last year.

Geltaidd (who had a sterling season last year, winning their league and also the Aber Town Cup) took on the Premiership Pornstars, who had an equally impressive season last year, in a seven goal stunner. An early penalty, converted by Llyr morris and another goal from Pornstar’s Wiliam Roberts gave them a flying start, and they looked to dominate the game.

Yet Geltaidd responded near the end of the second half with two goals from Jack Thomas to level the score. There was a 250+ turnout at the ground, where both teams loyal fan bases were present and making themselves known. The Geltaidd fans pulled out some inspired chants and the Pornstars responded in kind with their impressive all-female support, turning the other DIGS teams present green with envy. At the half there was entertainment from the Tarannau Cheerleaders, who wowed crowds with an impressive routine put together at short notice.

The second half was just as lively, with Geltaidd beginning to dominate and attack well, which finally paid off when captain Ynyr James scored to snatch the lead. That was not all she wrote as the clock would down, and Pornstars answered well with a Llyr Morris equaliser in the dying stages of the game to make it 3-3. The crowd were hoping for penalties to add drama to an already intense match, but first came the extra time.

Both teams attacked and defended with all they had, Geltaidd coming close with some very unlucky misses, however it was Pornstars again who gained the lead with an excellent strike by Bedwyr Jones making the score 4-3 with just three minutes till the final whistle. It looked to be over yet the struggle went on, Geltaidd having a last minute shot on target which was met by a wonderful one handed save by part-time keeper William Jones who was rumored to have had no idea he was playing in goal until the morning of the game.

This ended a passionate showdown between the two teams with Pornstars as the victors, running straight to their fans who had been cheering throughout. To borrow a quote from the great Brendan Rodgers, both teams showed great character throughout. Hopefully this will inspire future competitors in the Thai Pham Shield to follow suit.
