Nothing but paddles: Upcoming charity raft race

GRAB your paddles and get tying some knots as it is that time of year again! If you have no idea what I am talking about then it is, of course, that time of year again for The Glengower’s Annual Charity Raft Race. On Sunday 24th May at 2pm, the Raft Race, which is in aid of The RNLI will begin. Local competitors, students and locals, will compete for cash prizes and have a fantastic day doing something very different for charity.

The entrance fee for this competition is only £10 per team and there are no requirements for the amount of people that can enter. In the past, there have been many wacky and creative entries in this race, such as a Dragon-themed boat in which there is also a prize for ‘Best Fancy Dress’. The rules are as follows:

  • No Sails
  • No Engines
  • No Pumps
  • No Propellers

Essentially, you have to use brute strength and oars to paddle from the beach outside The Glengower to South Beach. All rafts are hand-made using any materials that you can find beforehand. If you think you are up to the challenge then make sure you visit The Glengower’s web-site ( to access their application form by WEDNESDAY 20TH MAY! If not, it definitely seems like an entertaining spectator sport.
