Varsity 2015 Match Report: The Women show how rugby is played in Aber

THE WOMEN’S rugby match was the only rugby match of the day, due to suspensions of Aber Rugby Union and Bangor Rugby League teams. This meant the girls had to represent Aberystwyth rugby, and it is safe to say that did that and beyond.

Down at the Treborth pitches of Bangor, Aber kicked off at midday. During the majority of the first half, the ball stayed inside the Bangor half of the pitch. Aber kept pushing through, and earned the first try of the day thanks to Fiona O’Henley. During the first half of the game, Aber took back another two tries.

Then came the second half. Starting off with a huge lead of 15-5, Bangor started to make their way back. But with more fine play from Aber, they were able to keep their lead finishing 25-19. Players of the match for Aber went to Hayley Ellis and Sioned Llywelyn, who were truly awesome throughout the match. Captain Leonie Mahon and Vice-Captain Hayley Ellis both said that it was ‘the toughest Varsity they ever played’ but they ‘did what they did best’.
