Harleys told to ditch challenge or face closure

ABERYSTWYTH pub Harleys was threatened with closure unless it ceased its ‘Harleys Challenge’.

A T-shirt was offered as a prize to anyone who could down four double measures of spirits, including tequila, Bacardi rum, sambuca, and Jack Daniel’s whiskey as quickly as they could in a “single sitting”. harleys

A spokesman for Alcohol Concern said:

“The promotion was a challenge to drink four double shots in one go, with no breaks or drinks in between, in order to win a T-shirt. We thought this was a pretty clear breach of Home Office rules which ban drinking games that encourage people to drink too much or too quickly. The rules also prevent offering prizes for drinking.”

Ceredigion Council served Harleys with a closure notice – but the bar then “immediately” withdrew the promotion.

A report to the council’s licensing committee said council officers had taken action after visiting the premises.

It stated:

“Following a complaint from Alcohol Concern and as a result of enquiries, a large licensed premises in Aberystwyth was visited and evidence of irresponsible promotions was gathered both within the premises and on the premises’ website and social media site. The premises licence holder was advised and the promotion was stopped with immediate effect and both website and social media site stripped of the promotion.”
