Pier goes into administration

THE FUTURE of Aberystwyth Pier is in doubt after administrators were called in to manage the site’s assets.

The pier, which opened in 1865 and is the oldest in Wales, is run by Don Leisure Limited, who run Pier Pressure, the Pier Brasserie restaurant, Inn on the Pier, the Pier Amusements and Don Gelato Ice Cream Parlour.

They have blamed the storms that hit Aberystwyth last January and the subsequent loss of business as factors in their decision to seek an administration order.

A statement from Don Leisure Limited’s managing director Andrew Deakin said:

“Recent poor trading results has necessitated the owners of the Pier to seek the protection of an administration order. The Pier escaped the worst of the storm last year but its trading suffered with many students returning home. Whilst it seemed to have recovered during last year, trading in January and February was very poor. The administration will protect the business whilst the owners work with the proposed administrators to determine the best future for the Pier. A number of options are being considered ranging from a restructuring to a possible sale. The Pier will continue to trade normally during this period and will appreciate your continued custom to support this great local asset.”

Ceredigion County Councillor Ceredig Davies stated:

“I’m very sorry to hear this news. The pier has been an Aberystwyth landmark for 150 years our thoughts are with those affected and in particular those employed there. We can only hope that the owners find a way out of this situation so the pier can continue to benefit the town for another 150 years.”
