Aberystwyth Women’s Lacrosse win BUCS Quarter Final Cup Match

ABERYSTWYTH Women’s Lacrosse 1st team claimed a solid win on Wednesday afternoon against University of  the West of England Women’s 2nds in the BUCS Western Cup Quarter Finals, clinching a 12-2 win at Vicarage Fields. The win was an important one for the team, as it was the first BUCS match that Aberystwyth Women’s Lacrosse have wonWomen's Lacrosse this year.

Aberystwyth set the tone for the match early on, scoring a goal in the first few seconds. UWE’s team made several valiant and aggressive attacking attempts, however Aber’s tight defence held them off, regaining possession very effectively. At half time Aberystwyth had secured a strong 5-1 lead, with tenacious midfield defender, and Wales Lacrosse player, Megan Thomas scoring an impressive 3 goals.

Pitch conditions worsened rapidly, so the second half was messier and made for difficult groundball play. With UWE tiring, Aber benefitted from having rolling substitutes on the pitch. Despite UWE winning the majority of the face-offs, Aber held the majority of possession throughout the match, resulting in another 7 goals by the team’s top scorers: Megan Thomas, Zoe Guilford and Katie Hodges.

Team Captain Katie Woodbine was delighted with the result, saying “We all worked really hard as a team, and I’m pleased that everything we have been working on in practice is coming together in matches, particularly stick skills and fighting for groundballs which were both done especially well today. We showed great spirit and I can’t wait to carry this momentum forward into our next game. Bangor better watch out!”

The team will be on Bay Radio next Tuesday between 5-7pm on The Sports Show and follow them on Twitter via @AberLacrosse
