Large river search launched for elderly man missing from Aberystwyth

The search operation for missing 82 year old Richard John Middleton has now been called off after the body of a man was discovered in the river Rheidol. Mr Middleton’s family have been made aware of developments.


POLICE and rescue services in Aberystwyth are undertaking a search for an elderly 82-year-old man who has been missing since Wednesday evening.

Richard John Middleton, also known as ‘Jack’ or ‘Jackie’, was last seen at his home address in Prospect Street, Aberystwyth last night, but his car was found parked near the river at Glanyrafon industrial estate this morning.

He is described as approx. 6’2” tall, of slim build, with grey thinning short hair, and walks with the aid of a walking stick.

In a statement, a Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said:

“It is believed he would have been driving his black Vauxhall Corsa in Aberystwyth town centre from around 11pm last night until sometime before 7am this morning. The Fire and Rescue Service and Coastguard are conducting searches along the river, and the RNLI Lifeboat is also assisting in the search.”

Anyone who saw Mr Middleton overnight or this morning, or anyone with any information about his whereabouts is asked to contact police as a matter of urgency by calling 101.
