The scrum. A potent weapon for AUMR again last Wednesday

ABERYSTWYTH Men’s 1st XV claimed a very good win against UWSTD Swansea 1st XV by 15 points on Wednesday afternoon at a sun drenched Vicarage Fields following a tough lost away at Hartpury 3rds the previous Wednesday.

As is expected from AUMR 1st XV this season, the set-piece truly has been solid; this trend continued this Wednesday with Owen Howells, the tight-head prop back in the side after recovering from a thumb injury. From the powerful scrum, Norway international Nick Saeby had a consistent platform to pick up from the base of the scrums. Paddy James set the tone for the whole of his match early on, with a superb touch-finding punt in open field. He claimed his first penalty goal of the afternoon after 10 minutes with a try by full-back Josh Irvine cross for a try 2 minutes later, which was duly converted by James. With 5 minutes of the half to play Swansea (Metropolitan as they were known before) bounced back with a five-pointer but Aberystwyth replied through a Paddy James penalty goal and another Josh Irvine try. His second try coming through some good play down the right-wing by Chris Dennehy as he took on the Swansea blindside flanker before feeding full-back Irvine for his second. The score was 20 to 5 at half-time.

UWTSD Swansea reacted better to the half-time whistle as they crossed for a converted try after 5 minutes to bring the score to 20-12, which was followed by a long-distance penalty goal by Swansea’s scrum-cap wearing outside-half to make it 20-15. With 25 minutes to play there was on score in it, but Paddy James stepped up and took the scores to 23-15. From here on in, Aberystwyth kept ahead and claimed a victory. Joshua Irvine added a third for the afternoon after a very good break by centre Zach Mayne, and the bonus point was claimed in over-time with Sam Pritchard crossing in a thirteen man maul. Aberystwyth’s set-piece was solid and comfortable for the whole 80 minutes despite losing pivotal scrum-half Will Brown early on, but the likes of Sam Pritchard and Jacob-Weaver Jones should be happy with their afternoon’s grind. The First Team don’t have a BUCS fixture until the new year, and this bonus point keeps them in touch with Western Conference 2B league leaders, Hartpury 3rds.

The Second XV lost to Bath Spa 1st XV by 20-5, with James Evans claiming the home side’s try.
