Match Report: Badminton Men’s 2nd team

DOMINANT. That’s how the Men’s 2nd team played on Wednesday against their BUCS opponents from South Wales. From start to finish, each player in the team had a consistent level, with which the USW Pontypridd & Cardiff’s 3rd team couldn’t deal with. This strong start to the season gave Aber an 8-0 victory.

BaddersThe action started with both sets of doubles teams winning their ties against the opposition, with strong and powerful displays. The travellers couldn’t deal with the strong showing from Aber’s two doubles teams, with both winning their first ties 2-0. The reverse fixtures had a similar showing with Dave Foxely and Saiganesh Lim managing to smash their way to victory, again winning the match 2-0. The other Men’s doubles team featured the captain, Ieuan Williams and his partner Mark Pimblett. It was a similar story, as some impressive net play by Ieuan and consistently good serving by Mark gave Aber the win.

In singles, Andrik and Jingping gave solid performances in their matches as well. Andrik opened up the singles with a comfortable victory, with his opponent clearly struggling to deal with Andrik’s court coverage and all round play. His second match was just as impressive, but Aber at this point already had an unassailable lead. Nevertheless Jingping was able to round out the victory to give the team the win without losing a single game.

The strong display pleased captain Ieuan who said “We played very well and the team played its best.” On his own performance with Mark he went on to say “the partnership is moving on to the next stage. It’s the first game we have played together and we worked cohesively.” He also identified a few areas the team can work on but overall he was very optimistic for the team’s future fixtures.

The win by the Men’s 2nd team came as the 1st team, under the captaincy of Xander Barnes, managed a 5-3 away victory over Gloucestershire 1st. Sadly Hannah Homard-Roy and her Women’s team couldn’t get their BUCS campaign under way due to their opponents withdrawing on Tuesday,  but I am sure they are anticipating the arrival of Swansea 1st next Wednesday.
