Female manager of men’s team confirmed

Helena_CostaHelena Costa has been named manager of Clermont Foot in the French Ligue 2. She becomes the highest profile female manager of a men’s senior team.

Costa has a vast amount of experience in the game having managed both the Iranian and Qatari women’s national football teams, as well as the Benfica youth team. She was also a scout for Celtic between 2008 and 2011.

The previous highest profile female manager was Carolina Morace who took charge of Italian team Viterbese for two matches in 1999.

Costa has previously managed Portuguese lower-league team Cheleirense, where she won the Lisbon regional championships in 2006.

Despite her credentials, Costa’s appointment is likely to raise eyebrows within the game around the world. Clermont striker Remy Dugimont has said that Costa’s appointment will “create a buzz and be a unique experience.”

Getting the backing of her players will be the first job for Costa as she aims to secure promotion to the top division of league football in France.

Costa will take charge of Clermont on the 1st of June.
