New bandstand designs up to consultation

PLANS to refurbish the bandstand on Aberystwyth promenade have been up for public consultation, after the previous design was dropped.

The initial design, first unveiled in November 2013, proved to be incredibly controversial due to its large size and modern design, seen as not in keeping with the town and promenade. These plans were put on hold in the aftermath of the extreme weather in January, during which the current bandstand did not sustain any damage, and were finally dropped in March. The bandstand refurbishment forms part of the Welsh Government Regeneration Fund’s projects, with a completion date of March 2015 confirmed by Cllr Alun Williams of Ceredigion County Council.

New Plans

The new plans are of a more conventional design, keeping the shape of the existing bandstand. They also include a walkway around the outside of the building, to assist in the strengthening of the seafront’s flood defences. Internally, spaces will be utilised either for storage and toilet use, or for commercial usage. These are still up for discussion, and the results of the consultation will assist in the final decision. It is hoped that the new space will be used for events and performances, with a glass front to make the building more appealing overall.

The consultation stays open until the 30th of May, with forms available in the Tourist Information Centre on Terrace Road.
