This follows the trend set in other University league tables, with Aberystwyth falling from 47th to 82nd in the Times Education rankings, and from 81st to 88th in the Guardian Education rankings, where it was 50th in 2012.

This drop has come at the same time as other Welsh universities rose in the league tables. Cardiff University has risen 12 places in the Complete University Guide, up to 23rd from 35th last year, and Swansea University has also risen, to 42nd from 48th, whilst Bangor University remained 64th.

The drop in rankings comes only a month after second year computer science student Kieron O’Shea began a petition calling on Vice-Chancellor April McMahon to resign. In his petition, O’Shea referred to figures from last year’s Complete University Guide rankings, as well as to falling admission numbers and various other issues.

Despite this, the International Student Barometer has revealed high satisfaction amongst international and EU students, who ranked Aberystwyth 1st in the world for ‘managing research’, 7th for personal tutors, 4th for financial support and in the top 10 for safety.
