ABERYSTWYTH Show Dance team danced their way to victory at this weekend’s Varsity, beating Bangor University in seven out of nine different categories. Aber started as they meant to go on in the Open category, where the genre of dance was up to each team, wowing the crowd with a hip-hop routine which was closely followed by Bangor’s Irish dance number. Aberystwyth won both the beginner and advanced ballet routines, on which Amy Le Grys, a dancer from Beginner ballet troupe, said “we’ve been training since November and you can really see the results of the hard work today!”.

The battle of the tappers was up next with both Bangor and Aber bringing out lively, upbeat beginners tap routines and while it was a close competition, Aber’s beginners secured the win in the end. The advanced tap got even more heated with increasingly technical steps and very different themes. Aber danced a fun 1920’s number but ultimately Bangor’s technical army style tap was a little sharper and triumphed.

The lyrical/contemporary round also showcased a lot of talent with Bangor choosing a dark, contemporary style and Aber taking a lighter, more lyrical approach. Both universities danced beautifully however Aber’s more classical style was ultimately victorious. Bangor’s beginners chose to use a rucksack as a prop and allowed the audience to interpret the story they were telling, contrasting against Aber’s high impact lyrical to an Adele ballad, while Bangor’s advanced dancers set their routine to an upbeat Evanescence number. However in the end Aberystwyth knocked them out with stunning turn sequences and fantastic choreography.

In the final stage of the competition both of the beginner jazz teams brought high energy routines to the stage and a few jazz hands even emerged, however it was Bangor who won the round with their1950s inspired dance. Towards the end of the event Bangor showcased their skills with a fast paced routine, but Aberystwyth’s atmospheric jazz number had the crowd dancing along, the perfect ending to this year’s Varsity Show Dance Event.
