UCU-logoThe UCU are lobbying Parliament as a result of the funding cuts on higher and adult education. A spokesperson for the UCU has said that it is of ‘vital importance’ that as many members as possible join the lobbying at the Houses of Parliament to stress how important investing in education for post-16 and adults.

The figures indicate that spending on UK education is below the OECD average. In 2009 the UK spent 6.0% of the GDP which in terms of figures amounts to £4.9 billion. The proposed funding cuts will mean that the amount spent between now and 2016 will reduced by 19%, amounting to £463 million.

In addition the funding for 18 year olds will also be cut by 17.5%, consequently affecting colleges nationwide. Currently Higher Education funding is under pressure with the current teaching grant being set to be reduced by 42%, amounting to £1.2 billion by 2016 which will also affect other funding pots.

To get involved with the mass lobby, please notify them by emailing jsherrard@ucu.org.uk. You can also book an appointment with your local MP for Wednesday 2nd April 2014 between 2pm and 4pm, or by writing them at the House of Commons, Westminster, London, SW1A 0AA.
