Digs League update – 14th March

THE WARM weather from the weekend held up for this Wednesday’s Digs League fixtures and there were 13 in total, followed by one match in less pleasant conditions on Thursday morning.

Wednesday’s games began on campus, with a place in the Consolation Shield quarter-final at stake for Aberzaijan and SH Pandas, on the Astro. Pandas took control in the first half and held a lead 2-0 at half time, before George Breese got the final goal of the game to give Pandas a solid 3-0 win.

League games then began at Blaendolau and Prestige Worldwide were up against Ivory Toast. It was 0-0 for the first 13 minutes of the match but then things took a turn for the worse for the Toast. By the break Tom Cottrell had scored five and Prestige led 13-0. After 55 minutes it was 17, Josh Watts bagging his fifth, and by the end Nathan Youlton completed a hat-trick as the game ended 20-0. The second half was notable, however, for the moment when Ivory Toast captain Jed Woodcock demanded a smile from each of his players before his side went 15 minutes without conceding.

The excitement didn’t stop there as, in the Bundesliga, Daniel Middleton helped Pathetic Athletic edge past Aber Kadabra 1-0, and Toby Odubela scored as Obi Wan Kenobi Nil went top of the league as they overcame Aber Town Cup semi-finalists Bassett’s Allsort Army by the same scoreline. Elsewhere in the same league, Alban Fernandez’s hat-trick helped Toke City beat Aber Lions 4-0, and Nick Robinson also scored three as Commodore whacked FC Beaver 5-0.

In the Premier League, the big game was FC Leave-My-Arcelona against CPD Y Geltaidd. Man of the match Ynyr James hit the bar for Geltaidd in the first half, and moments later Matt Parton missed an open goal for Arcelona as the teams reached half-time level. It was only Andrew Goodwin who could make the breakthrough as Geltaidd capitalised on a mistake from the Arcelona keeper to win 1-0. Elsewhere Gus Harris scored three as Academic Athletic mauled SH Pandas, who were playing for the second time in the day, 7-0. Iestyn Jones was named man of the match as he scored both goals in CPD Premiership Pornstars’ 2-0 defeat of Athletico Bil-Banter, and FC Inter Yournan came from two down to beat Notinher Forest 3-2.

In La Liga, We Hate Ben came from behind to beat Borussia Teeth 7-1, with last year’s Digs League top scorer Nathan Lang scoring four. The other game arranged in La Liga was abandoned as S.E.S. couldn’t raise a team and Abertina were awarded a 6-0 win.

On an incredibly gloomy Thursday morning, kick off was delayed due to fog on the astro in the final second round match from the Consolation Shield. When things did eventually get going AC ALSOM were no match for Goal Diggers; Rian Devlin scored six of the goals in a 9-0 triumph, including two beautiful lobs.

In the Aber Town Cup, FC Hammer were ejected from the competition after fielding three University first team players in their quarter final against We Hate Ben. This means We Hate Ben will face Sex Panthers in the semi final.
