Digs League Update – 3rd – 9th March

THE WEATHER has taken a turn for the better this week and the Digs League has taken full advantage with 12 matches taking place across both cups and the several leagues.

The week started on the Astro with a Consolation Shield 2nd Round game between Pathetic Athletic and Aber Lions. A brace from from Matthew Webb earned a 2-0 win for Athletic, who joined Toke City and Notinher Forest in the pot for the quarter-final draw.

On Wednesday, down at Blaendolau, Athletic were in action again against Obi Wan Kenobi Nil in the Bundesliga. This time they were not so fortunate, losing 2-0 thanks to goals from Tom Draper and Adam Brelsford. Fellow Bundesliga team Commodore FC, beat Shakhtar LastNight 10-1 with Will Bacon bagging a hat-trick, whilst Nick Robinson and Harry Geyton were amongst the other scorers.

The first Aberystwyth Town Cup quarter-final match was taking place nearby between Abertina and Prestige Worldwide. Abertina took a 2-1 lead with skipper Jared Lloyd-Jones and Matt Williams getting on the scoresheet, but Prestige turned the game on its head, thanks to four goals from Prestige’s super-striker Tom Cottrell, eventually winning 4-2.

Thursday’s 10am kick-off on the Astro was another Consolation Shield fixture. Aber Kadabra overcame a lacklustre Academic Athletic side on penalties. A first half opener for Kadabra forward Dave Bates was cancelled out late on by captain Ryan Leggatt’s slick finish. Both sides missed a penalty apiece in the regulation shoot-out, but Finn Brownbill struck the winner in sudden death.

There were eight games on Sunday, kicking off at 10am with Abertina taking on Borussia Teeth. After a slow start – in which Jared Lloyd-Jones missed a host of chances – Abertina took control and ran out 11-1 winners. Joe Roberts was one to watch in that game, weighing in with a  hat trick.

Simultaneously, Aberzaijan were smashed 5-0 by CPD Premiership Pornstars and, at 12, Aberconda beat Ivory Toast 8-0, with captain Eric Olsson being named man of the match. FC Beaver lost out to Aber Lions 3-1, and FC Leave-My-Arcelona struggled to beat Notinher Forest before substitute and man-of-the-match Jack Mason helped them to a 2-0 win.

The quarter-finals of the Town Cup were also completed on Sunday. In the first fixture, FC Hammer were reduced to ten men but still managed to take We Hate Ben to penalties after a 1-1 draw. We Hate Ben would be made to pay as Hammer ran out 5-3 winners on penalties.

Cup holders Sex Panthers found themselves 2-0 down against CPD Y Geltaidd but a miraculous comeback was completed in stoppage time by Michael Cotter-Jones. The game ended with the score 2-2 and Panthers prevailed in the shoot-out by a scoreline of 4-3. Finally underdogs Bassett’s Allsort Army faced new boys Internazionale United in a closely fought tie, which also ended in a 1-1 draw. The Allsorts rode out 4-2 winners on penalties.
