Term 2 music guide – an ultimate mix CD

CD_DVD_CollectionsRECENTLY I wrote an article for the print version of The Courier that listed a few songs that I thought ideal for the calming of nerves during revision. Now that exams are behind us (for the most part) and we’re about to get stuck into the new term, I figured that I should write up a playlist fit for a new year; new music to discover that will get you up for those 9AM lectures and walking up Penglais Hill with a spring in your step relative to how much caffeine you’ve consumed already.

This article will list three unique playlists all intended for different situations; the chilled playlist is packed with hits from a recent growth in chillwave artists who create a unique sound comprised of mellow beats and samples that are useful for both relaxing and partying. The indie playlist is as broad as the term itself; it mixes lo-fi with hi-fi, underground with mainstream. The more recent rise in interest in the west-coast lo-fi sound is mixed up with the upbeat and poppier indie-disco tracks towards the end, making for a diverse list of songs suitable for chilling out and getting for the hopeful summer laziness to come this year. Finally there is the party playlist; in a personal bout of frustration at the generic and repetitive status quo of music heard on weekends, I have endeavoured to introduce to this list something that will bring meaning back to the word ‘party’. This means upbeat electronic and house music mixed in a way that you can leave playing in the background as people start dancing on your furniture and dancing like maniacs.

So I present to you Daniel’s Ultimate Start of Term Mix CD.

Disc One: The Chill List

This particular list comprises tracks from the genres of chillwave and electronic from the past couple of years that have begun to spring up all over the place. Though nominally underground in the past, some of these songs have been breaking through onto adverts, sitcoms, video games and mainstream airplay. The list is a personal favourite and comprises tracks that are designed to ease you with revising, working or relaxing from a stressful day of work.
Best used for; revision sessions, stress reduction, showers, napping and other forms of laziness.

  1. Clams Casino – I’m God
  2. Washed Out – Feel it All Around
  3. Toro y Moi – So Many Details
  4. Kids of 88 – Tucan
  5. Beach House – Norway
  6. Friendly Fires – Paris (Aeroplane Remix)
  7. Tycho – A Walk

Disc Two: The Indie List

For when you’re lazing around hungover, in between parties or on your way to a lecture; this selection of tunes will guarantee to perk you up and get you in a good mood. Starting on a balanced diet of surf-rock and west coast indie hits it moves into gradually rockier sounds before ending on a nice blend of indie-disco and lighter releases from over the past two years.
Best used for; pizza parties, light drinks, travelling, daytime hangover recovery.

  1. Best Coast – I Don’t Know How
  2. Surfer Blood – Take it Easy
  3. Wavves – Nine to God
  4. Palma Violets – Best of Friends
  5. Japandroids – The House That Heaven Built
  6. Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks
  7. Vance Joy – Riptide
  8. Last Dinosaurs – Time & Place

Disc Three: The Party List

This list is comprised of an incredible mix of songs designed for the weekend. The same stuff you’re going to hear in Yoko’s or Pier Pressure every weekend? Sack that off. What you need is something original and new, something with a faster beat and a party attitude, not something repetitive that seemingly hangs around in the background whilst everyone and their grandmother is getting off with each other. This list is guaranteed to generate an influx of people dancing on tables and swinging t-shirts around in the air and will hopefully have people clamouring for reform for the current generation of going-out music.
Best used for; parties, parties, parties, alcohol infused mayhem, dancing on tables, finding nirvana.

  1. Digitalism – Blitz
  2. Neelix – Disco Decay (Felguk Remix)
  3. Flume – Sleepless
  4. ODESZA – If You Don’t (ft. Cumulus)
