THE PLANS for the future usage of the iconic Old College building in Aberystwyth were exhibited to members of the public during a community event in November.

The building, which has been part of the University since its establishment in 1872, started its life as a hotel in 1865, but in recent years has fallen into lack of use. The plans signal an intention to turn the building into a post-graduate and PHD hub, with accommodation and offices being part of the plans, along with a dedicated postgraduate workspace occupying the existing library on the first floor. The room that was formerly the main lecture theatre on the ground floor will be turned into an artists’ gallery, with the quad becoming an exhibition centre for sculptures.

The Seddon Room, along with the current University Council chamber, known for the portraits of previous Vice-Chancellors of the University on its walls, is intended to become a restaurant and café.

Along with the plans, a redevelopment of 1 & 2 Marine Terrace is planned to give four-floor postgraduate accommodation in both buildings.
