Tough run in for Aber Uni FC

Aber Uni 2 (2)The Aberystwyth University Football Club have reached the last 16 of the Central Wales Senior Challenge Cup. The team was successful against lower division opposition in the previous round, defeating Hay St Mary 5-1.

It has been a fairly disappointing season for Aber Uni FC in the Spar Mid Wales 1st Division, which club chairperson Barney Tierney has put down to inconsistency in the playing squad. They currently sit 13th in the division just four points above Dyffryn Banw who are bottom of the table.

Aber haven’t played since 14th December when they travelled to Bow Street and played out a 1-1 draw. The team haven’t had much luck on the road this season, failing to record a win on their travels all season. In fact the draw against Bow Street represented their only away point of the season.

Home form has been better for the team, despite the fact that the last two games have ended in defeat. The team losing 6-3 and 4-2 to Aberaeron and Carno respectively at Vicarage Fields.

Team captain Matt Perry has been impressive at centre back, leading a defence that, despite the poor form, has managed to keep it fairly tight at the back. He singled out Ben Jenkins and Barney Tierney for praise, saying they had been integral to the team all season.

The team has now played 14 games which marks the half-way point of the season. Whilst there have been positives to take, the three wins at Vic Fields are a particular highlight, improvements are needed in the coming year if the team are to avoid relegation. Aber have two games in hand on their opponents and so a late resurgence is by no means out of the question.
