5 films to look forward to in 2014

hgWITH 2015 looking to be one of the biggest years in film, we look at the biggest hits to tide us over this year…

The Butler

Already nominated for 20 awards and won 5 so far, the Butler focuses on the life of an African-American butler who serves through the terms of office of eight presidents in residence at the white house. In this time, various significant historical events occur that shaped the course of actions that led to civil rights in America. These events included the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr and JFK, as well as the Vietnam War. The Butler ‘Cecil Gaines’ bares eye witness to this and not only does it affect the USA and the rest of the world but his own family are in the firing line. His wife turns to other ways of coping with the state of the world, and other friends and family, acting out of character, begin to turn his world on its side. Directed by Lee Daniels and starring Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and Alex Pettyfer; ‘The Butler’ is definitely on my must watch list.

Heaven is for real

The story of a young boy, Colton, who has a near death experience and sees the truth of the afterlife. His experience in heaven begins to shake things up a bit when he returns to Earth and starts commenting on the deaths of family members that he hasn’t ever met. Can the sweet, innocent, naivety of a little boy be mistaken for insanity? Or is he telling the truth? Will his family believe him even though they don’t believe themselves? ‘Heaven is for real’ is in cinemas Easter weekend 2014, just in time to think about the real meaning of Easter. Even if you aren’t religious, it looks like it could be well worth a watch. Based on the novelisation of a true story, the touching film stars the likes of Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly, Jacob Vargas and Nancy Sorel. This makes it in the list of ones to look out for because it is slightly different, and seems like it will be a film to make you realise just how precious life is.

The Hunger Games: Mokingjay Part 1

The final book in the trilogy. Katniss and Peeta have faced the horrors of the arena for the second time, but can they face the events that are to follow? 2013’s release of ‘Catching Fire’ blew the original Hunger Games film out of the water, so this one has some big shoes to fill. It was ranked the highest grossing film of last year in America. With Katniss now reluctantly the face of the revolution, will she find Peeta again? Will she survive the wrath of President Snow? What will happen to the districts? To be released later this year, Mockingjay, which should feature some gory fight scenes with piles of dead, has started some controversial debates due to the number of younger viewers in the audience. However, there are high hopes all around for this film starring Jennifer Laurence and Josh Hutcherson.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Playing the notorious Jordan Belfort, Leonardo DiCaprio is back as the shady stock broker. The story follows his wealth, built on corruption and crime, and then his capture by the federal government. He was living the dream. This is Leo’s latest film since The Great Gatsby and once again he is playing a glamorous fraud. The amount of swearing in this film has been noticed by critics and has been deemed unnecessary but record breaking as it contains the most swear words in a film to date. Despite the lack of substitute expletives, the film has been nominated for 44 awards including 2 golden globes. Prepare for lots of party scenes. Starring Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie, this looks like one of this year’s best films.

The Muppets most wanted

My vote for the feel good film of the year – the Muppets have returned! To be released in March 2014, the Muppets are about to land themselves in a small spot of bother. On a world tour, they get tangled in a jewel robbery which involves a deceptive Kermit look alike. The musical comedy stars Rickey Gervais, Tina Fey and Ty Burrell. ‘Muppets most wanted’ is the sequel to ‘the Muppets’ which featured a trip to LA for Gary and Mary’s anniversary but while they are there, Gary’s brother Walter helps the Muppets save their studio from the evil businessman Tex Richmand. Bound to be full of giggles, catchy songs and cringy scenes, the Muppets make the watch list for 2014.
