Aber DIGS League beats the weather

THE ABERYSTWYTH University Football Digs League finally kicked off on Sunday following a series of postponements brought on by the Welsh weather. The first round of fixtures came in the Aber Town Cup, with 18 teams in action in the first round.

The game of the day was a hard fought one between Aber Lions and Shakhtar Last Night. Shakhtar came into the game as underdogs, having only been formed at the beginning of the season, but managed to pull off an upset, winning 2-1. Shakhtar took the lead early in the first half when Lions failed to clear a corner, Dan Walford smashing the ball into the net. Lions managed to pull one back before half time through Nur Hassannuddin and should have taken the lead when they won a penalty. The penalty was missed by the Lions player, the Shakhtar keeper making a brilliant save low to his left. Despite Lions enjoying the majority of the attacking play in the second half, Shakhtar managed to grab a breakaway goal and hold on to win the tie.

In the other action, Notinher Forest earned a well-deserved 2-0 win over a strong Aberconda side. The goal of the day came from Notinher Forest, their striker with an audacious chip from the edge of the box leaving the keeper stranded. A great goal from Callum Upward helped AC a Little Silhouetto of Milan to a 3-1 victory over Aber Kadabra FC. They managed to hold on despite a late surge from Kadabra.
