ABERYSTWYTH University have approached the Students’ Union with an offer to provide a sexual health service.

Following plans to run a demonstration in Haverfordwest against the closure of a sexual health clinic in Aberystwyth on the 31st, the University have offered the service as part of the recruitment of a new part-time nurse.

The new service will be open for longer hours each week than the sexual health Clinic, and easily accessible through the Wellness Centre on Penglais Road. As a result of this, the Students’  Union has taken the decision to cancel the demo.

Hywel Dda, the Local Health Board responsible for the clinic, announced the decision to close it in January this year as part of a wider review of sexual health services in the area, saying that there wasn’t an adequate demand for its services.

A spokesperson from the Students’ Union has said “we would like to thank the University for recognising the need for sexual health facilities to be provided on campus.”

They continued, saying “We acknowledge that provision is still far below standard here in Aberystwyth, therefore any action taken will be targeted local provision.”
