EVENTS: Aberystwyth School of Art Showcase

There is a variety of mediums and subject choices, everything from traditional portraits to video installations. It’s clear there is a great amount of talent hidden away at the School of Art. The thought and skill put into some pieces has produced beautiful results and really makes the exhibition a delight to wander around.

Walking through this exhibition made a refreshing change to the “stuffiness” of some galleries, and as it’s on a fairly small scale there doesn’t feel like there is the usual pressure to look like you ‘know’ about art. Instead it is just a good way to feel a bit cultured and have some creative escapism from exam stress or end-of-year boredom.

Look out for some eerie etchings of fairy-tale scenes, the subtly transfixing photographs of ‘watching privacy’, an architectural style glimpse at the skyline of Gibraltar, a time lapse video of bacteria growing and some strikingly realistic portraits you could stare at for days. Obviously these are personal favourites, but there are many more styles and interests catered for as well.

The show is running from 20th till the 30th May and is free to visit, but if you have some spare loan to invest in up and coming artists you can always splash some cash and take the art home!
