WEST Coast Vikings and WFC Warriors won the top Cups at the annual Rugby 7s tournament, held on Blaendolau fields on 4-5th May.

The West Coast Vikings contested a close run Division One final against Mighty Mutant Moose People, emerging victorious with a score of 14-12 and taking away a £400 prize. Crucial winning points were won by a run down the right flank, followed by a swift inside pass that led to the ball being taken over the line for the try. A successful conversion boosted the points difference.

In the Women’s First Division, WFC Warriors picked up £300 for winning the Cup. They defeated Vicious, Delicious and Ambitious 21-10 in the final, having already dominated the weekend with some excellent play.

Meanwhile in Division Two, the Cup went to controversial side St. Peters, a team comprised of players from Cardiff, winning £250. They beat Budgie Smugglers 19-10, but the final was marred by some unsporting behaviour from the players on the sidelines who were goading the opposition; not exactly in-keeping with the spirit of the weekend.

West Coast Vikings player Bryn Evans won Best Men’s Player of the Tournament, and Megan Price from Merched Y Geltaidd won the Women’s. Both players received a £50 prize.

Division One Men’s

In the other cups of the weekend, the Division One Trophy went to Gosling RFC who had a comfortable 33-14 win over ITB Raiders in the final, despite a slight fracas late on after a high tackle. In the Shield, the Wet Bandits hammered Cwmtwrch Cavaliers 47-5. The Division One plate accolade went to the Booze Brothers, whose pace was the deciding factor time after time, winning 28-21 against the Honey Badgers. In the lowest ranked competition in Division One Crusaders won 28-21 against Blitzkreig to secure the Bowl.

Division One Women’s

In the Women’s Trophy, well supported Merched Y Geltaidd overcame Hot Trot 27-14. The Shield was won by Pirates in a close final, 15-12 against Ruckin Lovelies and the Filthy Princesses won the Plate 10-0 against 7-Up.

Division Two Men’s

Wasters Y Geltaidd beat Wunderwurst 19-12 to win the Trophy. Meanwhile, Scrum of the Earth lost out to Generic 7s in the Shield, Generic 7s first try of the fixture setting them up for the win. Pistrol Shrimp dominated Powdered Rangers 31-5 to win the Plate, and Hawks just about got the better of Try Hards 15-12 to win the Bowl.
