John Glasby, newly appointed Union CEO

JOHN Glasby has been appointed as the permanent chief executive officer of Aberystwyth University Students’ Union.

Glasby joined the Students’ Union in October 2012 as Commercial Services Manager, and has held the position of Interim CEO since November 2012.

He replaces previous chief executive officer Geraint Edwards, who left the Union in October 2012 in controversial circumstances.

Since his appointment, Glasby has been credited with leading the Union through a major restructure, the development of a new Strategic Plan (which outlines a clear direction for the Students’ Union over the next three years) as well as overseeing the introduction of Starbucks and Stone Willy’s Pizza into the refurbished Cwtch bar.

He has also overseen the launch of an online shop and the appointment of a new senior management team.

In the announcement, the Union indicate that Glasby’s future projects will focus on membership services, specifically with initiatives in employability, sport and activities, and a complete overhaul of election rules and processes. They also reveal that plans are being drawn up for a massive re-development of the Union building.

Commenting on his appointment, Glasby said “I’m very excited to take up this position, especially as the Union has already embarked on a path of major change.”

“Difficult decisions were made from the onset, but we are already beginning to see the benefits of those endeavours. I very much look forward to working with current Union staff, the incoming Sabbatical Officers, and of course our students.”
