A FIRE is burning part of the top floor of the National Library of Wales this afternoon.

Visitors and staff were evacuated immediately after the alarm was raised at 2:40pm, with the fire intensifying soon afterwards. Six fire engines, two police cars and an ambulance are currently on the scene, with firemen on a hydraulic platform currently tackling the blaze.

Foam and water begun to be applied to extinguish the fire 35 minutes later at 3:15, with reports suggesting that the water was coming from the University Swimming Pool.

A National Library spokesperson told Aberystwyth Student Media that the risk of damage to books was considered to be low with the majority of damage being done to office areas.
