Varsity: Women’s Hockey Firsts Aber 2 – 5 Bangor

Women’s First looked to overturn the 7–1 loss from the previous year.

Aberystwyth settled into the game quickly following the early Bangor pressure and had the girls not had a mix up on their short corner, could easily have levelled the playing field. Bangor though fought through and were a constant threat down the middle, with Aber making full use of the “if in doubt, hit it out” defending. Some fine saves from the First team keeper and great defending prevented any of Bangor’s many shots hitting the net, but with Aber struggling to get out of their own half, Bangor capitalised and scored another from a short corner.

Aber could have gone into the break with a goal had Rebecca Potts aimed her shot just an inch to the right just before half time, but it wasn’t to be. Bangor started the second half as they meant to go on and quickly scored a third. Credit to Aber though, they did not lie down and take it, instead clawing the possession stat back into the 50’s for large parts of the second. This forced some unbelievable saves from the Bangor keeper, finally making it past her 15 minutes in.

Aber let their guard down though and Bangor countered to nullify Frellie Connor’s first. The ball then spent little time in the middle of the park, it was end to end for ten minutes and Connor almost got her second. Bangor took a yellow and went down to ten players. Aber capitalised in this loss which became their most dominant part of the game. Connor didn’t miss this time and took the score line to a more amicable 4–2, but only for Bangor to reply in almost exactly the same way as before. Playing the rest of the game out for a win, but one which did not reflect the effort put in by Aber’s Women’s First.
