Philomusica of Aberystwyth

SINCE the late 1980s and the closure of the University’s own orchestra society run by the Department of Music, Philomusica has been Aberystwyth’s only orchestra. Despite having been founded years before, the closure of the Music Department brought many new players and opportunities to Philomusica, including the chance to become the official University orchestra.

The new links with the University brought a surge of new players; including a notable increase in student membership over the years. In 1992, there were only seven student members; now they account for over half the orchestra, with the rest compiled of professional and local musicians. Music bursaries help attract musical students to Aberystwyth and rewards them financially for their participation in not just Philomusica, but the groups run by the Music Department, headed by Director of Music David Russell Hulme.

Twice a year, the Orchestra holds a concert in the Great Hall of the Arts Centre, often with renowned soloists performing a varied programme.
