Water Polo side succumbs to loss at Birmingham

The Aberystwyth University Water Polo sideTHE WATER Polo club journeyed to Walsall for their first fixture against a highly rated Birmingham University team earlier this month. Two teams journeyed down in the hope of properly kick-starting what has so far has been a productive year for the club. The first team played the opening game, getting the afternoon underway.

The game was in the balance for the first couple of minutes, with the score at 2-0 after the first quarter. The second quarter went the same way, and by half time it was 4-0 to Birmingham. The third quarter was the best of the game for Aberystwyth. The 1st  team got onto the score sheet and managed to outscore Birmingham 2-1, getting the basics right and taking chances when they presented themselves. Sadly, the last quarter was a bit slow and Birmingham shut the game out with some clinical finishing and slick passing, leaving the game at 7-2 when the final whistle blew.

Next up was the 2nd team, a team which had many of their players playing in their first ever water polo game. However, they were more than up to the task and, even after Birmingham women’s team found themselves four goals up, the team stuck together and started to claw their way back into the game, getting one goal back at a time whilst also keeping Birmingham at bay, thanks to some awesome play from Lucy Foreman and Charlotte Holmes, though not taking away from the combined effort of the whole team. At half time the score sat at 6-2, but the team managed to keep up the pressure and continued to score some classy goals. It finished 10-6, with two penalties also being missed, which will keep the team positive as they go into the Carmarthen Tournament weekend.

All in all, it was a really good and successful day, with both teams having lots of positives to build on.

The stats are as follows: First Game: Birmingham 7-2 Aber 1sts. Goals: Tom Kelly, Charlotte Holmes, Majors: Tom Kelly, Charlotte Holmes, George Bird.

Second Game: Birmingham 10-6 Aber 2nd Girls. Goals: Lucy Foreman x 2, Charlotte Holmes, Michaela Nortje x 2, Robert Green.
