Mens Uni football team off to winning start

Aberystwyth University Football Club crest.ABERYSTWYTH University F.C (Mens) got their season off to a fantastic side with a 3-0 hammering of Dolgellau. The home side never looked threatened by the side who sit bottom of the table. Within the first minute, Daniel Pugh was sent past the Dolgellau defence after a fantastic through ball by Tomos Court but Pugh sent it wide of the far post.

Court then went on a great weaving run through the defence, and after being tackled the clearance was headed just over by Ederra Zabala.

The University side had started far brighter than their opposition and aside from a shot by Mike Rees which was saved well by Phil Draper, Dolgellau rarely tested the Aber goalkeeper’s gloves.

The home side were awarded a penalty after Court sent over a corner which was cleared off the line but Dolgellau didn’t deal with it properly. Graham Dyment then received the ball, raced into the area and was tripped and University were given a penalty.

Gareth Thomas then stepped up to take it, and slotted it past Sion Williams in the Dolgellau goal with ease, into the bottom-right corner.

Williams in the Dolgellau goal looked unconvincing and with tricky corners being delivered by Court he failed to come and claim any of them in a competent fashion.

University then could’ve doubled their lead but a fantastic stop by Williams prevented this. A free-kick was sent in with the ball dropping to Zabala whose shot from 6 yards was palmed over the bar by the Dolgellau goalkeeper.

The second half started much in the same way that the first did, with a University attack. Dave Williams ran forward, played a good one-two with Pugh and finished with the aid of the right post to double the lead.

Dolgellau’s Iwan Koss then teed himself up to volley just over the bar in their only chance of the half aside from Rees going one on one with Draper but choked at the last minute and couldn’t get a shot away as the defence caught up with him.

Thomas then had another shot saved before doubling his goal tally for the game. In almost another carbon copy of the second goal, Thomas played a one-two with Jordan Reid and drove a shot in which Williams got a head to but it tricked in for a third.

A convincing start to the season for University, whose success may have been partly down to club Chairman Dan Moore whose play in the middle of the pitch was exemplary and hardly put a foot wrong all game. The side look well drilled overall, with there being no sign of the lack of a conventional pre-season that they have missed out on, some fantastic play and touches.

Former Welsh Premier side Welshpool are next for the University side and they will look to make it two wins in two games.
