Teddy bears’ picnic success for EduSoc

OUR AIM as EduSoc (Education Society) is to not only provide a fun and social meeting point for people studying Childhood Studies and Education, but to also provide a chance for anyone considering working with children an opportunity to gain valuable experience within the sector. The society was established last year and already has become a 150 member-strong society.

On Saturday 22nd September, EduSoc held a free family fun day which we called the Teddy Bears Picnic. With 46 children attending, it was a great success. There were various activities that the children were able to participate in, including face painting, biscuit decorating, bookmark making, painting and play dough. There was also a free play area which included toys that had been donated to the society. There was a cake stand and a Teddy tombola which both raised money for Save the Children, which is the chosen charity of the society. Members of the committee, society members and friends helped out during the day and we would like to thank them. The parents and guardians of the children all commented on how their children, enjoyed the afternoon.

One of the aim of the Teddy Bears picnic was to find out how interested people in the area would be at attending a playgroup for children aged new born to three years of age once a  week. This would be run by committee and society members and would give them all a chance to plan activities and interact with children, allowing them to gain extra experience if they are planning to work with children in the future. From the feedback we received from parents and guardians during the afternoon, we felt we should also try and set up a group for children aged 3 years plus.

Our next steps as a society are to find a suitable venue for the fore-mentioned ventures. We are currently in the process of doing so and will keep members informed through emails and our Facebook page.
