New campus bus service unveiled

A NEW bus service linking town, the National Library and campus launches on September 13th. Service ’03’ will be operated by Mid Wales Travel and branded in a distinctive bright green livery.

The new National Library and University Circular will consist of a bus circulating between the town, the National Library and Penglais Campus every 20 minutes, Monday to Friday during term time. Buses will run to and from the promenade between 07.40 and 22.45. The first bus arrives on Campus at 07.51 (at the Sports Centre, 07.52 Penglais Campus Entrance, 07.53 Arts Centre) with the last bus leaving at 22.33 from the Arts Centre. The last bus to Campus will leave town at 22.20 (promenade) and arrive at the Penglais Campus Entrance stop at 22.32.

The bus route through Campus will enter the University via the new National Library link road, behind the sports centre. The first stop is at the Sports Centre for those using the lower part of campus. The bus then continues to the existing bus stop adjacent to the Penglais Campus Entrance. It will then turn right towards the Arts Centre where it will stop by the steps leading up to the concourse, allowing access to the Arts Centre, Hugh Owen Library and Student’s Union. Then it will proceed along the main road before turning right down Maintenance Hill where it will stop again by the Sports Centre, before finally exiting the Campus via the link road to the National Library. Users will be able to join or leave the service at any of the stops on Campus.

Concerns have been raised that the numbering of the new service will be confusing, as Arriva currently operate a service numbered “3” which runs between town and the University campus. Both the Traffic Commissioner for Wales and Ceredigion County Council are unable to prevent two services being registered with similar or even identical numbers. The new “03” service will cost £1 for a single ticket, and a yearly pass will be available from the Students Union for £65, allowing travel on all Mid Wales Aberystwyth services – details of timetables will be released this week. Arriva’s “3” service costs £1.30 for a single ticket, with a yearly and termly bus pass available to students, allowing travel on all Arriva’s Aberystwyth services for £125.

In a statement, the University said: “We are hoping to further develop the public transport services generally across all campuses. We continue to strive to make our campuses as accessible and sustainable as possible and believe that providing access to the bus service at multiple key locations across Campus will provide a real alternative for those travelling on foot and by car.”

To accommodate the new bus route, the one-way system around the lower part of Penglais Campus has been reversed and some parking bays have been removed.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated, incorrectly, that Mid Wales Travel would not offer a travel pass or permit as in the last academic year. This was based on information provided by Mid Wales Travel. We have subsequently corrected this error.
