Suspect arrested after police stand off

POLICE took a suspect into custody today following an hour long stand off in Aberystwyth today.

One police officer reported that the suspect had been threatening mental health support workers in his residence with a knife.

Dyfed-Powys Police have yet to confirm the identity of the man, however it is believed to be a local man.

Police arrived on the scene around 3.45pm, closing Portland Street and clearing the surrounding flats. Around 100 onlookers had gathered to watch events unfold.

Police armed with riot gear and tasers entered the property and emerged nearly an hour later with the man, who was taken into custody. It is not believed that anyone was hurt in the incident.

Speaking to The Courier, an acquaintence described the man as “sometimes a little bit firey but a real character and a lovely bloke”.

According to our source, the man involved has been recently taken to drinking heavily, however it has yet to be confirmed if he had been drinking prior to the incident.
