Conservative Future in “harassment” scandal

THE ABERYSTWYTH University branch of Conservative Future, the youth wing of the Conservative Party, has been hit by scandal after disagreements between a number of senior figures resulted in allegations of harassment and complaints being made to the police and party headquarters.

Tensions came to a head following recent elections for the society’s committee, in which one candidate lost elections for two positions and was then defeated by RON (re-open nominations) for a third. It is understood that in the fallout from that event, a large number of phone calls were made to other society members by the mother of the boyfriend of the candidate in question, leading the recipients of those phone calls to report them to the police as harassment.

Conservative Party headquarters are investigating a complaint believed to have been made by the same woman relating to the conduct of society members at the election. It is alleged that one person persuaded a number of members to attend the elections and vote against the candidate, despite many of those members never having attended any previous meetings of the society.

The Chairman of the society resigned on May 9th, and one of the Deputy Chairs resigned soon after. The Deputy Chair cited personal reasons, but sources suggest they were unhappy with the way the elections had occurred.

Senior Aberystwyth party figure Shaun Bailey said:

The matter has been fully investigated and there was no breach of the Constitution and the entire election was run within the boundaries of the rules laid down by Aberystwyth Guild of Students and the Conservative Party.

It is however of course important to reiterate that all elections within Aberystwyth Conservative Future are done according to the procedures and practices laid down within the Aberystwyth Guild of Students Constitution and the Constitution of the Conservative Party.

It is now for Aberystwyth Conservative Future to move forward, to look forward to a new year , a new intake and the fun and challenges that lie ahead, and be assured that Aberystwyth Conservative Future is looking forward to an amazing 2012-2013 academic year.

I wish all committee members, former and new all the best for the future and thank them for the work they have done or about to start doing.

The Conservative Party were unable to comment whilst their investigation is underway. Dyfed Powys Police were not able to locate an entry on their systems in relation to reports of harassment.
