Staff to be laid off at Rachel’s Dairy

AS PART of a major restructuring in the company, Rachel’s Dairy, Aberystwyth’s largest private sector employer, will be losing a large number of staff over the coming months.

Staff at Rachel’s were called in last week, to be informed that a number of jobs could be lost in the sales, marketing, distribution and customer services departments. There is to be a “consultation period” before any decisions are announced.

Staff have been told that some jobs will be lost, while others will be offered relocation to other sites owned by the company elsewhere in the UK.

A major local success story, Rachel’s was set up as a small family business in 1942. Expanding significantly through the late 1990s and the early 21st century, Rachel’s was bought out by French dairy giant Lactalis in August 2010.

Lactalis, owner of other dairy brands including Président and Sorrento, has a global turnover of approximately £7.5bn. The company is currently restructuring its UK operations, as part of which up to 40 jobs at Rachel’s in Aberystwyth could be lost.
