Hospitalised Student Protester charged with violent disorder

20-year old philosophy student Alfie Meadows and 11 others have been charged with violent disorder for their actions during last December’s tuition fees protest in London. Middlesex University student Meadows needed brain surgery after he was allegedly hit so hard by riot police that it caused his brain to bleed. He fell unconscious on the way to hospital after being struck as he tried to leave an area near Westminster Abbey, then underwent a 3-hour operation to save his life. The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and they are investigating the incident.

Alfie’s mother, lecturer Susan Meadows, who also attended the protest thanked the medics after the incident.

Clare Solomon, president of the University of London Union, blamed the day’s trouble on provocation by ‘a violent minority within the police force.’
